From the book’s introduction:
As a youth minister I’ve endured many troubles, hardships and distresses.
(II Cor. 6:4-10)
I have been threatened with knives and fists. I’ve been in jail – just visiting, thank you. I’ve experienced riots like seeing a packed room of 75 teens fighting over my Hershey’s kisses being thrown at them. And of course, I have had a fair share of sleepless overnighters, retreats, and hunger, holding a “30-hour fast – planned famine” event to address world hunger. I’ve been called North America’s best youth minister and cursed as being “demon possessed.” Like Paul, I feel my story is both a success and a failure at times. I burned out while hanging in there. I’ve been verbally beaten like a piñata, yet not mercifully been out of my own misery. I’ve cried many tears of sorrow and of joy. Despite it all, youth ministry has been a rare privilege and gift that only a few of us brave souls will ever know. This small book is meant for those of you who realize the tremendous value and difficulty of youth ministry. I believe it will help to equip and encourage anyone working with young people.
This book is for those choosing a vocation as full time youth work to those who just want to love, mentor, and pastor today’s Generation Z. To be honest, in today’s economy of leadership in the church, you may be the one brave soul that has stepped up to the plate to bat. You have been asked or have signed up to a youth ministry leader for your church while the church is working hard to find a replacement hitter. What the church isn’t saying out loud is that the replacement won’t be coming soon. They will show up, once you’ve quit!
